The Centurion Challenge Honors Program
The Los Coyotes Middle School Centurion Challenge is designed to academically challenge and reward our highest performing students.  Students who elect to enter the Honors program will enter into a contract with their teacher and parents.  Requirements of the program will vary by subject matter.

Students interested in participating in the honors program will be eligible for participation based on their prior year subject area grades (A or B), teacher recommendation, and review of CST scores.  Students who wish participate in the Honors program must maintain at least a C in all subjects, good attendance, and  appropriate behavior.  Students not meeting these requirements may lose the right to participate.  Eligible students will register for the class during spring registration.  An application form signed by the student, parent, and current teacher of that subject must accompany the registration form.  Once enrolled, the student may drop from honors with the approval of their parent at the end of the trimester.  Only under highly unusual circumstances, with administrative approval, may a student drop from the honors program during the trimester.  Students who meet the criteria may apply for honors participation prior to any trimester.

Students may take one or more of the following subject area classes for honors credit: language arts, social science, science, physical education and/or mathematics*.  Eligible incoming 6th grade students may only be enrolled in an advanced math class (Pre-Algebra) during 1st trimester.  Interested students meeting the requirements at the end of the 1st trimester may add a language arts honors 2nd trimester.  In February, with administrative approval, a 6th grade students may have the option of adding a social science or science honors for the remainder of the 6th grade year.  Eligible 7th and 8th grade students may take more than one honors class during each school year.

Students taking a class for honors credit will be graded on a separate scale for each designated assignment.  The honors assignments will reflect increased rigor and in some cases an increased amount of work.  The overall course grade earned will be weighted to reflect the rigor of the course.  For example, a student who takes a language arts class for honors credit and earns a “B”, will receive a “B” on the report card, but the grade will be weighed as 4.0 in the school GPA calculation.  Therefore, it is possible for a student to earn above a combined 4.0 GPA for the trimester.  Honors GPA is only used at Los Coyotes.  A student may not earn below a “C” in a class and earn honors credit for the class.

Benefits of the program are:
  • Challenging academic program
  • Honors status and notations
  • Weighted GPA
  • Additional Recognition and Awards

*Note: Honors math is reflected in student placement in a course above grade level.  6th grade -  Pre-algebra, 7th – Algebra or Geometry, 8th – Geometry or Algebra 2.
